Abstract

567,298. Catalytic dehydrogenation. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. April 9, 1943, No. 5756. Convention date, March 27, 1942. [Class 1 (i)] A dehydrogenation catalyst is prepared by evaporating to dryness a mixture of freshly precipitated hydrated alumina and a solution of a compound of a catalytically active substance, and further heating to convert the compound into the oxide &c. Preferably the mixture is produced by adding a precipitant to a solution containing an aluminium salt and the other compound and controlling the pH so that only the aluminium is precipitated. The catalytically active compound may comprise the metals of group IV, V, or VI, with or without zinc, cadmium, or magnesium, compounds such as ammonium molybdate being preferred. The precipitating agent should be a volatile base. The catalysts are suitable for reforming gasolines, for dehydrogenating or aromatising aliphatic hydrocarbons, &c. The production of butadiene and the conversion of ethyl benzene into styrene are referred to.
