Abstract

567,197. Uniting by fusion. COOKE & FERGUSON, Ltd., and BRUCKER, R. Nov. 16, 1943, No. 19102. [Class 83 (iv)] In an apparatus for manipulating workpieces during welding and like operations of the kind comprising a revolving table upon a tiltable support, the axis about which the table turns is offset in relation to the axis about which it tilts, the tilting structure being arranged to counterbalance the load on that side of the table which projects the further from the tilting axis. A ring-shaped table d is rotatable about an axis f in a frame c which is tilted about trunnions b in a pair of standards a. The table is provided with an extension having inclined races x, y for engaging sets of guide rollers v, w on the frame, and having also a series of pegs q acting as a geaiwheel which mesh with a pinion r driven by worm and belt gear from a motor carried by the frame. The frame is tilted by a second motor h spring-mounted on the frame so as to tension the belt m through which the motor drives worm-gear o and a worm g, which engages a rack i fixed to one of the standards. The roller bearings consist of groups of three inclined rollers, two rollers v of each group engaging the race x and the other w the race y, a group of rollers being mounted at each end of a beam 8. The roller housings 2 are mounted for limited universal movement, being integral with sleeves 3 so that they may be movable about pins 4 through which pass transverse pins 5 about which the pins 4 are movable. The beams are also universally mounted on fixed pins 11 carried by the frame, the beams being carried by slotted hollow fulcrums 9 turning about inner fulcrum members 10 movable round the pins 11. The work pieces are clamped on the table so that the load on the side projecting furthest from the axis of the trunnions is counterbalanced by the motors on the frame and by filling the part p with metal or other weighting medium. Electric current from the work is earthed by a collector ring 14 on the table engaging spring-loaded brushes on the frame, the frame also carrying a sector engaging plungers secured to one of the standards.
