Abstract

566,445. Automatic exchange systems. SIEMENS BROS. & CO., Ltd., and CHRISTIAN, D. A. Aug. 13, 1943, No. 13187. [Class 40 (iv)] In an arrangement for selecting an idle one of a group of outlets each of which is associated with a grid-controlled gas-discharge tube, a number of outlets are tested simultaneously and the relays for responding to the ignition of the tubes are connected in a chain circuit so that only one output is selected. In Fig. 1, the tubes GT are arranged in rows and columns, with row relays VA, VB ... connected to the cathodes and column relays HA, HB ... to the anodes, the latter relays being in a chain circuit. An idle outlet is indicated by positive grid potential and the outlets of each row are tested simultaneously by the application of a starting potential to all the tubes of the row. If the row contains no idle outlet, the build-up of potential on a condenser QA ignites a pilot tube PT and operates a relay LA, LB ... to transfer the starting potential to the next row. When there are idle outlets in a row, the column relay connected to the earliest ignited tube energizes in series with the row relay and disconnects the later column relays. The operated relays indicate the selected outlet to an operator or to a selector switch, e.g. a cross-bar switch. The search may be repeated if no idle outlet is found. Instead of serving one large group of outlets, the tubes may be divided between several smaller groups, not necessarily of the same size, there being a separate starting circuit for each group. In Fig. 4, all the outlets of a group are tested simultaneously, the row relays VA, VB ... as well as the column relays HA, HB being connected in a chain circuit so that only one can be operative at a time. When the row relay of the earliest row containing idle outlets operates, it locks in series with relay E which disconnects the earlier row relays and prepares the circuit for the column relays. Relays HA, HB ... have separate locking circuits and control identifying circuits over a chain of contacts so that an outlet subsequently becoming idle in an earlier column produces no effect. The starting potential is applied over a stepping switch in order that the search may be restricted to one or more rows when required.
