Abstract
566,312. Boiler &c. tubes. ALLEY S. E. June 15, 1943, No. 9599. [Class 64 (iii)] A cylindrical boiler &c. tube 10 has its wall inwardly deformed by axially-spaced opposed pairs of channel-shaped depressions 13, 14 and 19, 20, &c., on the outside and corresponding mounds 17, 18 and 21, 21 respectively on the inside, adjacent pairs lying at a substantial angle, for example 90 degrees, to one another. The depressions are made shallow with gently sloping sides, so as to leave an uninterrupted central passage through the tube of a crosssectional area of at least one-half that of the tube before deformation; moreover, adjacent pairs are caused to overlap slightly to maintain the area of said passage substantially constant. The sides and bottom of each depression may be in the form of a single cylindrical, parabolic, &c. curve ; alternatively, the sides are flat and converge to join in obtuse V formation, the junction constituting the bottom of the depression, in which case one side may be at a different angle to the axis of the tube than the other side. The depressions are formed by pressing or .rolling, preferably with tools which are so shaped as to preclude the material of the tube extending beyond its original dimensions.
