Abstract
566,256. Pinking- machines. BRISKMAN, S. June 15, 1943, No. 9551. [Class 31 (i)] A pinking-machine which is designed so that the edge of sheet of material may be cut to produce a varied design such as a combination of serrated and scalloped edges, is constructed with a number of separate cutting knives which may be of different design and which are brought into operation successively and operated singly to produce the pinked edge. The construction permits of longer periods of operation between necessary changes or sharpening of the cutter knives. The material is fed over a work table formed of metal plates 27, 28 formed with a central aperture 33 in which the cutters operate, being advanced intermittently by a reciprocating serrated feed member 170 which is raised out of contact with the work during its return movement towards the right in Fig. 7. The work is then held by a reciprocating clamping-member 150, while the edge is cut by the lowering of the movable cutting-member 79 to shear a V or scalloped cut in coaction with a pair of cutting-members 77, 78 which are secured in an adjustable manner to a carrier 65, Fig. 6, secured to a shaft 47 mounted in end-bearings 49, 50 and adapted to be rotated intermittently by Geneva mechanism from a shaft 100, Fig. 7, which is provided with an arm 121 having a pin 122 for engaging slots 113 in a disc which is formed with grooves 114 to be engaged by the edge 119 of a disc 118 formed with a flat part 120 to free the disc for rotation by the pin 122. The shaft 100 may be driven by a pulley 105 or by a wheel 106 which can act as a fly-wheel. The cutting- knives 79 are carried round with the carrier 65 and rollers 76 attached to them move in an annular groove 54 in a fixed member 39 adjustably secured. to rods 37, 38 connected to the side frames of the machine. The shaft 47 comes to rest in such a position that the roller 76 of one knife 79 rests in an arcuate slot 60 in a sliding block 53 which can move radially in a slot 52 in the member 39 so as to raise the knife 79 above the surface to be cut. The knife passes through the cut made by a prior operation and then the material is moved by the gripper 170 to bring fresh material into cutting- position. The material is then held by the clamp 150 which is reciprocated by cams 160, 161 on the shaft 100 acting respectively on rollers 159, 158, on a slide 152 so as to move the slide positively in each direction. The gripper 170 is raised and lowered from the material by the action of a pair of cams 240, 241, on rollers on a slide bar 235 fitted with an arm 213. This arm oscillates a curved pivoted member 192 which engages a roller 191 on a slide which raises a rod 177 to which the gripper is pivoted against the action of an adjustable spring. In addition to the raising and lowering movement, the gripper is given an oscillating movement by oscillating a pivot 181 to which the guide for the rod 177 is attached, by means of a pin 230 on the slide 235 acting through a slotted link and a lever. The edge of the material is guided initially by a U-shaped guide 311, Fig. 1, which can be held in adjusted position by screws 312 and nuts 314: The fixed cutters are held in position by screws 831, Fig. 6, engaging apertures in parts of the cutters at right angles to the cutting-surfaces, and the sides of the cutters may be secured by clamps, and shims may be employed to take up wear.
