Abstract
566,140. Testing balance of rotary bodies. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. Nov. 23, 1942, No. 16562. Convention date, July 7, 1942. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for testing the static balance of toroidal bodies, such as inner tubes for pneumatic tyres, comprises a spider 30 carried on a rotatable shaft 22 and having around its periphery rollers 40 to support the inner tube under test while preventing the formation of unequal circumferential stresses in the tube. A graduated arm 62, Fig. 3, can rotate freely on the shaft 22, but can be locked thereto by a rod 74. A weight 68 is adjustable along a rod carried on the graduated arm 62. The inner tube to be tested is placed on the spider and with the arm 62 locked to the shaft 22, the adjustment of the weight 68 to cause the spider to balance about the shaft 22 is a measureof the out-of-balance of the tube. The spider may be adjustable to suit tubes or other objects of differing sizes. The axis of the spider may be vertical, the rocking of the spider out of the horizontal plane then being used to measure the out-of-balance.
