[Class 100 (ii)] Inking-apparatus.-In an ink fountain for a rotary printing press of the kind which is divided into two parts by a wall of adjustable height, one part containing a fountain roller and having means for introducing ink from a reservoir, and the other part having means for returning ink to the reservoir, a valve is provided in the wall to permit communication between the duct parts. As shown, the fountain 12, Figs. 1 and 2, is divided into two parts A, B by a wall 13, the part A containing a fountain roller 14 from which ink is conducted by a helically ribbed or multiple disc roller 15 to the ink distributing system 16, 10, 11, Fig. 1. An ink reservoir 60 has a bottom pipe connection 61 through a two-way valve 69 to a pump 70 and ink supply 68, and a top pipe connection 65, through a two-way valve 66, to the pump 70 and through a pipe 64 and stop valve 64<1> to the part A of the fountain. The fountain part B leads through a valve 72 and pipe 71 to the reservoir. By closing the valves 66, 69 respectively to the pipes 64 and 61, ink may be pumped from the supply 68 to the reservoir 60 and then by closing the valve 69 to the supply 68 and opening it to the pipe 61, the ink may be circulated through the reservoir and pump to thoroughly mix and condition the ink. By then closing the valve 66 to the pipe 65, ink is pumped to the fountain part A, surplus passing over the wall 13 and back to the reservoir by the pipe 71. A normally closed valve 45 is provided in the wall 13 to allow drainage of ink from the part A when the press is at rest. At this time also cleansing liquid may be supplied to the fountain from a pipe 75 and passed to a drain by a pipe 77. The wall 13 has overflow recesses 31, Fig. 2, in its upper edge, the recesses being more or less covered according to the desired ink level by a plate 32 longitudinally adjustable by a screw 36 and having inclined slots engaging screws 34 projecting from the wall 13. A dirt removing scraper 40 having small ink drainage holes 42 is fixed to the top of the wall 13. A duct blade 21 is adjustable by screws 23 spaced at column widths and page wide scrapers 22 are urged to ink cut-off position by spring plungers 28 normally held individually inactive by members 27 overlying the plungers.
