Abstract
565,558. Self-locking nuts. DUNDAS, Ltd., R. K., KING, R. D., and WOOD, N. F. May 17, 1943, No. 7823. [Class 89 (i)] Nuts are rendered self locking by separately formed plate attachments mounted on one end of the nuts and having one or more openings that pro vide a frictional drag on the bolt. A bent-up sheet metal member has parallel portions 1b, 1c, Fig. 1, the portion 1b being joggled tc provide a portion 1a by which it is secured, in spaced relation to the nut face, by welding, brazing, riveting, &c. The openings in the parts 1b, 1c are provided with threads out of pitch relation, or the metal may be soft enough for the bolts to form their own threads, this action producing the necessary elastic distortion of the sheet metal member. In a modification, the lower limb of the member may have a clearance hole for the bolt and be secured flat against the nut face as by a riveted over flange 2a, Fig. 6, on the nut. This method of fixing may be employed for a member having two, three or more limbs that frictionally engage the bolt, or the limb with the clearance hole may be attached by screws 3, Fig. 4. The various limbs may be separate and connected together by rivets and distance pieces.
