Abstract

565,466. Gas-producers. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. OF AUSTRALIA PROPRIETARY, Ltd. April 10, 1942, No. 4740. Convention date, April 10,1941. [Classes 51 (i) and 55 (i)] The hopper 5 andfuel bed 7a of the producer are each enclosed by concentric cylindrical shells, the hot gases from the fuel bed passing through the annular space 9 around the hopper, in which space ash is deposited, to an outlet 10 leading to a heat exchanger 40a, and the incoming air. passing down a conduit 11 in the heat exchanger to an annular space 15 around the fuel bed. Water is supplied by a pipe 53 to a flash boiler 50, and the steam is injected at 51 into the incoming preheated air. Below the fuel container 7 is cylinder 22 open at its upper end, and extending through an aperture 26 in the base, the air from jacket 15 passing through apertures 40 and upward through radial openings (not shown) in a grate 21. A primary tube 38 is provided and passes through the cylinder 22. The grate 21 is removably supported below the base 17 of the combustion chamber by wedges 27, which pass through apertures in supports 29 and in the cylinder 22 and engage the periphery 30 of the underside of the grate, being held in position by wedgeshaped keys 31 held in place by brackets 32, Fig. 3. The outer ends of the wedges 27 are bifurcated to take the keys 31, which may be used to remove the wedges 28 by being withdrawn, and re-inserted in the position shown in dotted lines, so that contact with bolts 33 forces the wedges outwardly. The grate drops on to pins 39a mounted on a closure plate 39 by the removal of which the grate can be lowered, and the ashes discharged. A gasket 27a is interposed between the rim of the grate and the base 17. The jackets 5b and 7 enclosing the combustion zone are readily detached from the upper shell 5a for replacement purposes.
