Abstract
564,598. Rolling sheet metal to tubular and other forms. JOHNSON, C. M. March 29, 1943, No. 5052. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1942. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Sheet metal is rolled to tubular, moulded and other forms of regular or irregular cross-section by passage, together with a mandrel or die of the shape required, through a roll pair, one of which is of rubber. As illustrated a channel section is to be formed, of the shape of five sides of a hexagon. The mandrel 18 and a supporting platen 19, with which it may be integral, is passed through a guide 20, Fig. 3, bolted to a table 26 in front of the rolls, together with the sheet 25. The lower roll 6 is a steel roll, but the upper roll has a deep rubber shell 8 bonded to the core 8<1> and confined between flanges 11. The rubber is so deformed as to press the sheet into close contact with the mandrel as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. A second guide located at the rear of the rolls is shaped to suit the platen and the formed stock. The lower roll is fixed in the housing, is driven at 15 from a motor 13, and drives at 171 a pump 17 for supplying fluid pressure to the pass adjusting piston for the yoke 12 supporting the rubber roll, trunnions 9 extending into guiding slots 10 in the main housing.
