[Classes 94 (i) and 94 (ii)] In the making and filling of a bag A for tea &c. made from two webs 1, 2 of paper, cellophane; metal foil, &c., fed intermittently over fixed rollers 9, 10, 11 and vertically reciprocating rollers 14, the webs are sealed along the longitudinal edges 3 and the lower transverse edge after lengths of string 7 have been placed between the webs, leaving the upper end open for the filling of the central part 4, after which the mouth is sealed and a line 6 is scored to form a detachable tag united to the longitudinal length of string 7. A braking device 15, 20 grips the webs during the rest periods, and tension on the webs is maintained by a pair of rotating brushes 105 arranged below the sealing device D. The filled bags are severed from the webs by a reciprocating device G. A loop of the string is drawn between the webs by a reciprocating hook 86 and after the webs have been sealed, the end of the loop is cut by reciprocating cutters, and the cuttings are removed by a suction device. The bags are filled by a reciprocating nozzle 117 fed with measured quantities of tea by an intermittently-rotating drum 131, 132 provided with a number of peripheral pockets 134, the volume of which may be adjusted by axial adjustment of the part 132. The drum is rotated through a clutch 142, 144, 147 controlled by a handle 149, and adjusted by means of a nut 136. The clutch has slipping means in case the drum is obstructed.
