Abstract

563,897. Manure. MITCHELL ENGINEERING, Ltd., and BULLOUGH, C. C. April 24, 1942, Nos. 5553 and 7296. [Class 111] A residue obtained from refuse by screening preferably after mechanical reduction is formed into a porous filtering mass supported on a drained floor and fed with sewage sludge, whereby the surplus liquid drains away and both the refuse and the sludge are composted. " Refuse " includes mixtures which may contain, in addition to house refuse, such materials as fruit pulp, straw, slaughter house waste, vegetable waste, sawdust, &c. The coarser and finer components of the waste may be treated separately or together, and if separated may be re-mixed during treatment. As shown in Fig. 1, retuse 12 passes a rotary screen 10 and the residue is fed by elevator 22 to reducing device 36 and then to the cell 42 having an under-drained floor 44. Sludge is supplied to the bed by pipe 58. 50 is a levelling device comprising scrapers on an endless belt. The coarser fraction passing through screen 10 falls on a garbage extractor 66 which delivers coarse impurities such as coal to hopper 72 ; the organic matter passes to hopper 76 from which it may be returned to the main body, either before or after the reducing stage, by elevator 84, or passed to either of two beds 94, 116, similar to the bed 42. The finer fraction removed by screen 10 may be fed to a fourth bed 128. Specifications 490,426, 500,548, [Group XVIII], and 521,894 are referred to.
