Abstract

563,800. Toughening glass. PARFITT, A. W. (Temp-R-Lens Corporation). May 5, 1943, No. 7095. [Class 56] A method of toughening a lens, watch glass, or like article consists in heating the article almost to the softening temperature of the glass, and then chilling it by means of a solid conductor, or a jet of gas, applied at the centre point of a desired strain pattern in the glass. The chilling apparatus comprises an upright member 22, Fig. 4, provided with a pivoted arm 25 which carries at its outer end a carbon rod 27 having a rounded point 28 at its lower end. A second carbon rod 29 having a rounded point 30 is mounted below and in line with the rod 27, and the two parts are drawn together by a spring 33. In use, the heated lens 31 is supported in a horizontal position between the points 28 and 30, either by the pressure of the points or by a suitable carrier. The points' rapidly conduct heat away from the glass to form a strain pattern, shown in Fig. 2, which can be seen by examination with a polariscope. The carbon rods can be replaced by metal rods, but in this case small pads of asbestos are placed between the points -and the glass to 'prevent the glass from cracking. The pads can be dispensed with if the points are spaced a little distance from the glass. In another construction, the rods are replaced by metal tubes from which a fine jet of gas is directed against each surface of the glass.
