563,734. Making pottery. MADDOCK & SONS, Ltd., J., MADDOCK, R. A., and JOHNSON, J. A. April 2, 1943, No. 5283. [Class 87 (i)] A machine for making pottery ware, more particularly flat ware, such as plates, saucers, &c., comprises an automatically operated combined batting machine which spreads the lump of clay and jigger which shapes it on a mould by means of a profile tool and includes a cam-shaft 24 driven by an electric motor 23 and carrying a pair of cams 26 which operate levers 19, 20, carrying respectively the spreader tool 21 of the batting machine above the revolving block 14 and the profile tool 22 of the jigger above the revolving mould 18, said mould 18 and block 14 being carried by spindles 17, 13, driven by electric motors 29, 30 by means of belts 34, pulleys 36 and friction drives brought into and out of operation by scroll cams on the shaft 24 ; other cams 43 operate spray guns 41 for moistening the work and a further cam 48 brings into opera,ti.on a scraper tool 45 for trimming the periphery of the shaped article. In a semi-automatic modification shown in Fig. 4, the levers carrying the spreader and profile tools are operated by cams on a shaft 24 driven by a worm 58 on a shaft 57 clutched to a motor driven pulley 54 by a friction clutch 55 controlled by a lever 49, the shaft 57 driving the spindles by belt and pulley drives such as 60, 61, 62.
