Abstract

Resin dispersions, stable to textile fibres, are obtained by polymerizing a methacrylic acid ester, with the aid of a catalyst and heat, in the presence of an aqueous solution of a cationic surface tension reducing agent; the monomeric ester may contain a dissolved resin and polymerization may additionally be effected in the presence of a water-soluble salt of a heavy or multivalent metal. Thus, the monomer and aqueous solution are agitated vigorously to produce an emulsion which is then heated, preferably above 60 DEG C. Specified are:-Cationic surface tension reducing agents-long chain alkyl ammonium, pyridinium, phosphonium and sulphonium compounds, e.g. cetyl pyridinium bromide, stearyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, and condensation products of diethenolamine and stearic and further reacted with dimethyl sulphate and alkylated polyamine-fatty acid compounds; resins-coumaroneindene, alkyd, phenol-aldehyde and natural resins, with or without plasticizers; catalysts-benzoyl and hydrogen peroxides; heavy metal salts-aluminium acetate or formate, barium chloride. Examples illustrate the preparation of dispersions from methyl- and n-butyl methacrylates, with and without the other additions, in the presence of the named cationic surface tension reducing agents; also their application to wool, silk, nylon, viscose and cellulose acetate materials. Specifications 563,709 and 563,712 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes similar preparations of dispersions from other vinyl derivatives including vinyl chloride, vinyl esters, styrene, acrylamides, methacrylamides, acrylonitriles and methacrylonitriles. The preparation of vinyl acetate dispersions is exemplified and the application of such a dispersion to bleached sulphite pulp and the formation of paper. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
