Abstract
563,384. Feeding webs. THOMAS, A. Feb. 5, 1943, No. 1978. [Class 100 (i)] [Also in Group VIII] A web feeding device, particularly for a machine for punching statistical record holes in a paper web, comprises a support movable to and fro and carrying feeding pins for engaging feed holes in the web, means being provided for moving the web relatively to the pins at each end of each stroke of the support to effect engagement of the web with the pins at the beginning of the feed stroke and disengagement at the end of the feed stroke. As shown, the web passes from a supply roll 33, Fig. 2, to a take-up roll 39 between upper and lower dies 10, 9, Figs. 2 and 3, which are secured together by a U-shaped member 18, 19 open at the front to allow threading of the web by a lateral movement thereof between the dies. The dies are perforated to receive selectively positioned data - representing punches 20 and two punches 42 of square section which form feed holes in the margins of the web. The dies are secured to vertical frames 5 which are raised to effect punching and lowered to free the web by toggle mechanism 83 actuated by cam and lever mechanism from a main shaft which may be driven by hand or by power. A shaft 43, rocked by cam mechanism from the main shaft, has secured to it a plate 40a to which is also secured a plate 40 to which are fixed a pair of feeding pins 41 of square section. Slidable on the pins 41 and plate 40 is a stripper plate 44 to which is secured a threader plate 46, the web passing between the plates 44, 46. A spring 45 urges the plates 44, 46 downwardly so that the plate 44 contacts arms 51 extending from the die frames 5. At the end of a, feed movement of the pins, which is the position shown in Fig. 2, the dies are raised to effect a punching operation and at the same time the arms 51 raise the stripper and threader plates 44, 46 so that the web is lifted off the pins 41. The pins then make their idle return stroke at the end of which the dies are lowered, pulling the web from the punches and lowering the arms 51 so that the spring 45 is effective to cause the threader plate 46 to press the web on to the feed pins 41. As, when the punches are clear of the web, the pins 41 are projecting through the plates 44, 46, means are provided for raising the plates 44, 46 manually to allow initial threading of the web. For this purpose the plate 40 is slidable on the plate 40b and may be depressed when desired by pushing inwardly a plate 62 having a cam slot engaging a pin projecting from the plate 40. To avoid undue strain on the web by the pins 41, the unwinding of the web from the roll 33 is effected by a a looping bar 35 on a lever 52 secured to the shaft 43, the loop being formed during the idle movement of the pins and while the web is held by the punches. The. web is wound on a split spring tube which frictionally grips a winding sleeve 54, Fig. 7, having a flange 56 carrying a pawl 57 co-operating with a gear pinion 58 engaged by a rack 59 pivoted to an arm 60 of the lever 52 so that as the bar 35 is lowered to unwind the web from the roll 33, the rack 59 operates to wind the web, previously fed by the pins 41, on to the take-up sleeve 54. The sleeve 54 is mounted on a fixed spindle 53 containing a spring plunger 71 which acts upon a finger 68 to hold it in engagement with the end of the roll being wound to prevent it wandering laterally. A similar construction is provided for the supply roll 33.
