Abstract

563,218. Electric selective signalling systems. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ROSEBY, P. N., and MACKENZIE, J. F. Jan. 21, 1943, No. 1067. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIX] In a system for signalling over a power circuit, the 500-cycle signalling generator is connected to the mains over an impedance network which normally permits the transmission of 500-cycle current and comprises a shunt inductance VL1 having a secondary winding which can be short-circuited to modify the network so that it no longer transmits 500-cycle current. As shown, the winding is short-circuited by a pair of gas-filled tubes GTA, GTB, operative respectively on successive half cycles, when contacts RCS are operated. In practice, these contacts may be controlled by a constantly rotary cam, the signal consisting of interruptions of the 500- cycle current repeated at a characteristic rate. The receiver may be similar to that disclosed in Specification 518,877. The network may be replaced by a simple resonant circuit of which the inductance is in two parts, one of which has a secondary winding which can be short circuited. The short circuiting may be done by a mechanical switch or by mercury-arc rectifiers. Where three-phase mains are used, it is preferable to use a three-phase signal generator and to provide each phase with the switching equipment shown.
