Abstract

563,020. Converting rotary into oscillating motion. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 28, 1942, No. 18390. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1941. [Class 80 (i)] Consists in a variable stroke oscillating mechanism particularly for actuating the agitator of washing machines. The driving shaft 6 is actuated by an electric motor 17 through a worm 14 and wheel 13 which is connected by a rod 18 to a friction gear segment 29 pivotally supported at 32 on a link 31. One end of this link is pivoted to an arm 34 hinged to the gear casing 4, and the other end is urged against a stop 36 by a spring 37 which tends to press the link against a cam 43 adjustable by a lever 46 adapted to engage notches 48 in a slot 47 in a supporting skirt 2. The friction surface on the segment 29 comprises an arc having its centre at a point 50 and, therefore, the central part of such surface will project beyond an arc passing through its ends and concentric with the axis of oscillation of the segment. By moving the lever 46 the amplitude of oscillation of the shaft 8 may be varied from zero up to a maximum value. Excessive pressure between segment and pinion is prevented by the yielding of the spring 37.
