Abstract

562,789. Pistons. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 11, 1942, No. 17677. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1942. [Class 122 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In hydraulic master cylinders, e.g. for brakes, of the kind comprising a piston carrying packing members at its front and rear portions and having a middle portion of reduced diameter in permanent communication with a reservoir, the front and rear portions and a rear packing retaining member are formed separately and rigidly connected together. The front portion 28, Fig. 3, may be formed with a flange 31 by an upsetting process and is welded, brazed or pressed in a tubular middle portion carrying a stamped or turned packing carrier 30. Holes 27 are punched through the flange and are normally closed by spring fingers on a plate 33 riveted to the portion 28. Alternatively, the portion 39, Fig. 5, may be welded &c. to a cupshaped member 40 formed by stamping and drawing and carrying a ring 45 to retain a packing member. In a modification, a similar cup-shaped member is welded to a flat stamping forming the front portion of the piston. In a further modification, two plastic mouldings are screwed together and support between them a ring having a packing retaining flange. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the construction shown in Fig. 8 (Cancelled). This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
