Abstract
562,685. Straightening. FORRESTER, H. J. C. (Hydraulic Development Corporation). Nov. 19, 1942, No. 16370. [Class 83 (iv)] A shaft-straightening press has two supports 98 on which the shaft rests during the actual straightening operation and auxiliary supports 52 with fluid pressure means for moving the supports so that the work rests on one set or the other thereof. Each of the supports can be adjusted on the bed 57 by means of a rack 62, Fig. 4, thereof engaged by a pinion 63 carried by each of said supports and turned by square ended shafts 65. Similar shafts 109 are used for moving wedges 107, Fig. 2, and thus vertically adjusting the main work supporting blocks 99. The supports 52 have rollers 55 to engage the work and are moved vertically, to lift the work from the blocks by plungers 53, Fig. 4. The left-hand rollers are driven, to rotate the work into the desired position, by a fluid pressure motor. The press 11, Fig. 1, can be adjusted along the bed 57 on rollers 58 by a fluid pressure motor 86, Fig. 2. The fluid for effecting these movements is supplied from a reservoir 15, Fig. 6, by a pump 17 of the kind in which a predetermined rise of pressure in the delivery pipe 18 automatically stops the pump from delivering more fluid. The pipe 18 leads to a hand-operated four-way valve 19 which can be arranged for automatic operation by means, of a rod 31, Fig. 2, stops 32, 33 and a slide 34 connected to the head 35. The valve 19 controls the movement of the ram 36 and the last part of its down stroke is regulated by means of an adjustable choke 24 combined with inlet and outlet valves 22, 45. When the valve 19 is set to hold up the ram 36, pressure is also supplied to a valve 47 which controls the movement of the plungers 53 and when these have reached their uppermost positions, as determined by adjustable stops, the work is free from the blocks 99 and the pressure builds. up in the pipe 82 and opens a valve 81 to supply valves 84, 76 which latter controls the motor 73. This is then operated to turn the work and the blocks 99 are adjusted to bring the bend into correct relation thereto. The valve 84 is then operated to rotate the motor 86 in the direction required to move the press 11 until the ram 36 is aligned with the bend. The valve 19 is 'then operated to reciprocate the ram 36. The whole operation is repeated as often as required. If a conical shaft is being treated it may be necessary to adjust the rise of the plungers 53 and the vertical position of the blocks 99 to the right and left of the press 11 differently. If desired, the blocks 99 may be moved vertically by fluid means and the rollers 55 by mechanical means. If the press is used for straightening one type of shaft, e.g. cylindrical or with same taper, the adjusting means 107, 109 may be omitted. In a modification and to reduce the number of flexible pipes required, two pumps are used, one stationary, to supply the plungers 48 and motor 73, and the other, mounted on the press frame 11, to supply the cylinder 14 and motor 86. 42 and 79 are relief valves.
