Abstract

562,576. Diaphragm pumps. TRIGGS, W. W. (Eisemann Magneto Corporation). June 26, 1942, No. 8827. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] A diaphragm pump for liquids or gases comprises a resilient diaphragm 12 having lateral rigidity, the central portion of which is coactive with the central portion of a peripherally supported leaf-like spring 30. The diaphragm and/or the spring may each consist of one or more flat or cupped spring steel laminµ, the diaphragm may be smooth or corrugated, and the spring may consist of a central hub with radiating arms. The periphery of the diaphragm is clamped between gasket rings 13 and its central portion is clamped by a nut 23, washer 24 and gasket rings 25 on a shoulder 21 on a bearing-free forked operating member 18 carrying a roller 19 for engagement with a cam 20, the operating member and roller passing freely through a hole 26 in the pump base member 10. The central portion of the spring 30 bears on the washer 24, and its periphery is supported by spaced seats 28 providing passages 29. The diaphragm 12 and the pump casing 14 define a pumping chamber 27 which communicates by relatively inclined check valves 42 with inlet and outlet chambers 37, 40 closed by removable caps 38, 41 which are fitted with flexible rubber diaphragms 54 to form pulsation-eliminating air chambers 53. Each check valve 42 comprises a leaf-like spring 46 which holds a valve plate 45 against a seat 44 on a sleeve-like cage 43 with a tapered throat 50. The cage 43 of the inlet valve is formed at the highest point of the annular recess surrounding the valve seat 44 with a hole 51 which co-operates with a slightly higher groove 52 cut at the highest point of the pump chamber 27 adjacent the throat 50 of the outlet valve, to provide for the escape of relatively light foreign fluids such as air or fuel vapour. The diaphragm 12 may be raised for priming purposes by means of a spring-controlled arm 65 on a shaft 60, the inner end 63 of which is machined off to form a pair of cam surfaces 64 which engage a shoulder 57 provided by a hole 58 formed in one leg of the roller fork 18. By holding the arm 65 in the rocked position, the roller 19 may be kept away from the cam 20 to stop the pump.
