Abstract
562,387. Tanks. STREET, W. O., SHAKESBY, L., BURY FELT MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 14, 1942, No. 17734. [Class 69 (i)] In a liquid fuel container for aircraft &c. with a protective covering adhesively secured thereon and comprising one or more layers of swellable rubber or rubber-like material secured to one or more layers of felt, at least one part of the covering is subjected to a preforming operation by heat and pressure to produce a non- planar shaped part adapted to fit closely over a corresponding part of the container. The felt may include one or more layers of woven or other reinforcing material, or comprise printers' blanket. As shown, each end of a tank 1 may be provided with a cover comprising pre-formed layers 5, 5a of felt, one face of each layer being coated with raw rubber 4 and the coated faces brought into contact ; vulcanization is then effected at about 130‹ C. for thirty minutes. The covers are secured to the ends of the tank by self-curing rubber or other cement ; the centre of the tank is covered by wrapping a strip 3 of the composite material round the tank and similarly cementing it. A flattened spheroidal tank may have a two-part cover, the parts meeting at the equator of the tank. The rubber may be secured to the felt simultaneously with the shaping operation. Where one layer of felt only is used, the rubber is placed between the tank and the felt and may be vulcanized to both simultaneously. An outer covering of canvas may be provided.
