Abstract

562,272. Electrically-tripped switches. ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION, Ltd., and DANNENBERG, K. Nov. 13,1942, No. 16099. [Class 38 (v)] In order to overcome the tendency for cartridge fuses of high current rating to rupture with light overloads, they are employed with an overload protection device, for example, a thermal relay, bimetal strip or coil, or a trip coil, rated and time-lagged so as to deal with such light overloads and obviate blowing of the fuse, and operation of each element is adapted to release a striker, thereby upsetting a trip gear common to both strikers. Specification 541,562 describes a suitable striker-provided, fusible element with a latch for preventing automatic resetting of the striker. In a polyphase arrangement, operation of either striker in any phase may trip all the phases. In Fig. 1, strikers 4, 6 associated with the fuse 1 and overload device 2, respectively, are adapted to rotate interconnected levers 10 about their pivots 11 and move a retaining cam 22 clear of a pin 21 on a spring-actuated rod 14 which closes trip contacts 23. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), an auxiliary switch in the casing is operated by release of a rotary lever. In Fig. 3, the elements 1, 2 act on a trip bar 46 on a rotary shaft 48 provided with a control spring 53 and resetting handle 51. A catch 52 on the shaft 48 normally retains a detent on a trip shaft 58 controlled by a spring 59. The device 2 and trip gear may be locked against resetting, and the former may be in series or in shunt with the fuse 1, or energized by a current or voltage-transformer having its primary in the fuse-circuit.
