Abstract

Phosphoric acid and dibasic acid anhydrides are produced by reacting anhydrous dicarboxylic acids with phosphorus pentoxide, distilling off the anhydride, extracting phosphoric acid from the tarry residue by leaching with water and clarifying with an adsorbent such as carbon, kieselguhr or bentonite. Examples describe the production of citraconic anhydride from itaconic acid, maleic anhydride from fumaric acid, and succinic anhydride from succinic acid, the phosphoric acid extract in each case being purified with active carbon.
