Abstract

[Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A liquid level indicating system comprises a power unit 22, Fig. 2, a rectifier unit 23, a measuring condenser 24 and a d.c. ratiometer 25. The power unit 22 comprises an oscillator generating a.c. at a frequency of about 20,000 cycles per second and energized from a lowtension d.c. supply through a vibratory converter 27. The output is fed to the rectifier unit 23 comprising a pair of step-down transformers 30, 31 and rectifiers 32, 33. The a.c. flows through two circuits in parallel, one comprising the primary of the transformer 30 and the measuring condenser 24 and the other comprising the primary of the transformer 31 and a reference condenser 35. The secondary windings of the transformers 30, 31 are connected through rectifiers 32, 33 to the separate coils of the ratiometer 25. The reference condenser 35 may be variable for zero adjustment. The measuring condenser 24 consists of two coaxial metal tubes 16, 17, Fig. 3, arranged vertically in and extending from the top to the bottom of the liquid container. At their lower ends the tubes are spaced apart by an insulating ring 18 and at their upper ends are secured to a flanged head 19 for securing the assembly to the top of the liquid container. Gauze-covered apertures 20 are provided to permit passage of air and liquid. The rectifier unit 23 may be housed within the flanged head 19. A number of measuring condensers connected in parallel may be arranged at selected points in the liquid container so that changes in attitude do not affect the reading.
