Abstract
560,839. Purifying mineral oils. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. July 28, 1941, No. 9551. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1940. [Class 91] In the sweetening of mineral oils by means of a copper reagent to precipitate the harmful sulphur compounds or to render them innocuous, the bulk of the copper solution being thereafter removed, the remaining smallquantity of copper. compounds is removed or rendered harmless by treating the oil with a relatively, small quantity of an organic aminoacid having the nitrogen atom of an amino group linked to the carbon atom of a carboxyl group through one or two intervening carbon atoms. Deterioration of the stored oil due to copper catalysis is thus obviated. Compounds specified comprise anthranilic acid, glycine, and oxanilic acid. The copper complex formed may be soluble or insoluble in the oil, and in the latter case may be removed. The oils treated are preferably petroleum oils boiling in the motor fuel, kerosene, and gas oil boiling range. In example, an acid treated, re-distilled and doctor sweetened, cracked naphtha is treated with copper napnthenates and thereafter with anthranilic acid in crystalline form or dissolved, in benzene or in isopropyl alcohol.
