Abstract
560,351. Machinery guards. TELEPHONE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., and LOVESEY, H. Nov. 30, 1942, No. 17022. [Class 80 (iv)] Guards for machine tools of the reciprocating type such as power presses, comprise a cage surrounding the tool, the cage having a number of fingers which can be pivotally adjusted towards and away from the tool and be fixed in their adjusted positions. The guard of a power press comprises a front plate 3, two side plates 4 and a number of adjustable fingers 5 extending downwardly from the lower edge of each side plate. The lower edge of plate 3 is at some distance from the bed 6 of the machine, whereas the fingers when vertical have their lower ends close to the bed. The front plate 3, an adjustable upper plate 31 and the side plates 4 are supported by a common frame comprising sheet metal uprights 7 secured to members 61 on the bed 6, and a single sheet metal member 71. The side members are curved inwardly and have inwardly turned flanges 41 slotted throughout most of their length. The front and side plates are secured by bolts and butterfly nuts such as 72, 75, 76 in conjunction with slotted holes. An additional support for each side plate is afforded by links 74. Mounted in lugs at the lower end of each side plate is a rod 51 on which are mounted bosses 52 of the fingers 5. The fingers may be adjusted individually to enable the hands of the operative to approach as near as possible to the tool without risk of injury and to handle safely the work being fed to the press. After adjustment all the fingers are locked by a nut 53.
