Abstract

560,161. Automatic control systems for railway &c. vehicles. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., CADMAN, N. G., and MAcGREGOR, R. M. Sept. 18, 1942, No. 13216. [Class 38 (iv)] The acceleration or retardation applied to a railway or like vehicle is limited to a maximum value by the electromotive force generated in the secondary winding of a transformer excited by a unidirectional current proportional to the speed of the vehicle. The secondary winding may be connected to a solenoid operating a relief valve in the brake control pipe and two or more such valves may be arranged to respond at different rates of acceleration or retardation. A rectifier in the series with the secondary winding limits the control to operation during acceleration or during retardation. Fig. 3 shows two secondary windings 16, 17 connected respectively to operate a brake pressure control valve D and an acceleration control relay P. The valve D may be actuated by a solenoid 12 against a spring 11 and a winding 22 assisting the spring may be energized by the voltage responsive to vehicle speed so that higher rates of retardation are permitted at higher speeds. An a.c. or d.c. generator may be driven by an axle of the vehicle, a rectifier being included in the exciting circuit of the transformer in the first case.
