Abstract

559,495. Re-igniting liquid fuel burners. McCOLLUM. H. J. D. Sept. 7, 1942, No. 12617. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1941. [Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] A combustion chamber 10 in which a liquid fuel mixture supplied by a tube 16 travels in a helical path to a heat exchanger assembly 32 is fitted with a re-igniter consisting of a hollow member made from heat and corrosion resistant metal alloy formed with a number of small ports permitting the flow of the combustible mixture to its interior. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the re-igniter consists of a spirally coiled sheet 40 of nickel chromium alloy having the pocket between its coils opening in a direction opposite to that in which the fuel mixture flows so that the mixture tends to enter the pocket and become heated to ignition temperature if the flame is extinguished. The re-igniter is welded to the top of the tube 16 which is fitted with a conical plug 26 and is formed with inwardly punched vanes 22 causing the mixture to issue with a rotary motion The combustion chamber is fitted with a stainless steel liner 14 and with an electrical igniter 24. Fig. 4 shows a modified construction of the re-igniter consisting of a tube 48 formed with spaced perforations 50. Suitable alloys are those sold under the Registered Trade Marks "Nichrome V" and "Inconel."
