559,271. Adhesive tapes or sheets. STEVENS, A. H. (Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co.). Aug. 20, 1942, No. 11756. [Class 140] An adhesive tape or sheet is formed by coating with a pressure-sensitive adhesive a backing which has been coated or impregnated with an elastic polymer of an ester of acrylic acid. The polymer may be applied in solution in a volatile solvent or as an aqueous dispersion which may be formed by dispersing the monomer or a low polymer in water containing an emulsifying agent such as the sodium salt of the sulphonic acid ester of lauryl alcohol and a polymerization catalyst such as a peroxide or ammonium persulphate and effecting polymerization of the dispersion. The backing may be impregnated with the mixture before polymerization, and polymerization effected by submitting the treated material to both infra-red and ultra-violet light. The polymer may be mixed with fillers, plasticizers, softeners, compatible resins or styrene or vinyl resins, or may be formed by polymerization in admixture with styrene, vinyl acetate or vinyl chloride. The backing may consist of crepe paper, paper formed of wood rope or rag fibres or synthetic fibres or of sheets of regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivatives. Glass fabrics, carded cotton fibres or felted or woven fabrics may be used. The adhesive may be formed of rubber or isobutylene polymer blended with rosin, hydrogenated rosin, ester gum, hydrogenated ester gum or hydrogenated indene resin, or of a polymerized acrylate with a tack-producing substance such as polymethallyl chloride or a soft and tacky intermediate acrylate polymer. The adhesive may be applied in solution or as an aqueous dispersion.
