Abstract
558,745. Phenol-aldehyde, urea-aldehyde resins. KNOTT, G. L., BALLEY, E. J. G., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 15, 1942, No. 8157. [Class 2 (iii)] A synthetic resin adhesive which does not penetrate porous surfaces and is thus suitable for bonding plywood is obtained by incorporating wood flour of such fineness that it passes through a 180 B.S.S. mesh sieve with a liquid thermosetting resin, e.g. a urea formaldehyde or phenol formaldehyde condensate. In examples (1) an alkali condensed resin was obtained by condensing phenol with formaldehyde solution for 15 mins. at 98‹C. using 2 per cent. caustic soda as catalyst and then dehydrating the solution to a solid content of 70 per cent. ; the product was then mixed with 10 per cent. of airfloated wood flour. (2) Urea and formaldehyde in the ratio 2.2 to 1.0 were condensed at 98-100‹C. for 3¢ hours under reflux and the product dehydrated at a pH of 7.0-7.3 and then mixed with 10 per cent. of airfloated wood flour. (3) the resin of Ex. 2 was mixed with 10 parts ammonium chloride, 50 parts water and 20 parts airfloated wood flour. The adhesive may be spread hot on veneers which are then allowed to dry and stored ; laminated products are obtained by hot pressing the treated veneers.
