Abstract
558,489. Endless conveyers. STEVENS, A. H. (Miller Printing Machinery Co.). Aug. 12, 1941, No. 10253. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XVI] A delivery apparatus which is especially applicable for delivering sheets from printing and like machines to form stacks of sheets is constructed with two or more pile supports 19 and corresponding conveying devices 16 and the conveying devices may deliver to either support while another support is being emptied, or the supports may receive the sheets alternately, and the conveying devices are driven independently by motors which can be de-energized automatically when the corresponding conveyer is put out of action. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2b sheets from an impression cylinder 18 are removed by strippers 33a and pass to conveyer tapes 37 driven from a motor 47 and carried by a frame 16, which is pivoted at 17 concentrically to the driving- shaft of the tapes and is held in operative position by locking-levers 31 engaging abutments 32 on the machine frame. The conveyer frame 16 which delivers to the second pile support 19 is shown in the inoperative position in dotted lines, and when in this position pivoted guide members 71, Fig. 8, direct the sheets to the first support 19. When the raised frame 16 is depressed into operative position, thereby operating a switch to energize the motor 47a for driving the second set of tapes 37, the members 71 are depressed and cause the sheets to pass to the second conveyer and pile support 19. In Fig. 8, which shows a form in which the sheets are delivered alternately to the two boards, the guide members 71 are shown in a position in which the sheets pass to the first support 19 and in this modification the second conveyer frame is oscillated by a link 91 with a slot which engages a pin 92 on the conveyer frame, the link 91 being reciprocated by a lever 93 oscillated by a crank 96 driven from the press. When the second conveyer frame is raised the guides 71 rise and direct the sheets to the first pile board 19. In the position shown in Fig. 8 the sheets pass on to the second pile board. The piles are automatically lowered by ratchet mechanism comprising an oscillating crank 55 oscillated by a bell-crank 57 operated by a link 56 and a cam on the press. The bellcrank 57 also operates side joggers 59 and rim joggers 60 for straightening the pile. The pile support 19 nearer to the press can be swung laterally about a pivot 23, Fig. 2b, on which a cross girt 22 is swingably mounted, the side frames 14a of the mechanism 10 being bolted to flat faces projecting from the girt. This adjustment of the support 19 of the mechanism 10 can be effected only when the conveyer of the mechanism 10 is uplifted as shown in Fig. 1, but in a modification the pile support can be moved laterally about a vertical hinge without moving the associated conveyer frame, the bearings for the frames 14a in this case being carried on the side frame 20 of the press. In a further modification the sheets are delivered on to one pile and the depression of the pile board operates automatic mechanism to cause the sheets to pass to a second pile board when the first one is full. This mechanism is somewhat similar to that shown in Fig. 8, but the link 91 oscillates idly until the feed board reaches a predetermined position when the board actuates a trip device to permit a roller carried by the second conveyer frame to be engaged by the link 91 which then depresses the associated conveyer to operative position, and also depresses the guides 71 which thereupon cease directing the sheets to the piling device which is full, and a change of delivery takes place. This feature forms the subject-matter of Specification 558,517. Specification 558,518 also is referred to.
