Abstract
558,410. Uniting metal to ceramic materials; enamels and glazes. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 8, 1942, No. 17425. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1941. Drawings to Specification. [Class 36] [Also in Group XXIII] For soldering to metal, an unfired porcelain body is coated at the selected surface with a liquid glaze consisting of copper oxide with a refractory oxide in a volatile non-aqueous solution of an organic binder, the glaze being reduced after firing to metallic copper. The copper oxide consists of finely-divided black oxide, and the refractory oxide of alundum, bauxite, mullite or zirconium silicate. The binder consists of bentonite, ball clay, or kaolin whilst the solvent consists of shellac in alcohol or asphalt in toluene. The copper glaze is reduced m an electrolytic bath. When metal caps or frames are soldered to these copper parts, washers of asbestos or glass fibre are used to prevent the molten solder flowing over the uncoated porcelain parts which may have a usual silicate glaze.
