Abstract
558,105. Sharpening twist drills. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and RICKS, F. June 17, 1942, No. 8264. [Class 60] A drill is sharpened by means of a grinding- wheel which is driven with a planetary motion, the drill being moved in a straight line or an arc to positions where the wheel grinds first one and then another cutting edge. In one form the wheel 23 is carried on an arm 11 driven by hand, the wheel shaft 13 being furnished with a pinion 17 meshing with a fixed internal gear 21. The drill is mounted in one of a number of appropriately sized cross holes in a carrier comprising a pair of discs 27, 29 and secured by a screw 39 which also secures the carrier against rotation. The drill abuts against a gauge 25 and the face of the disc 29 is fitted with strips partially obstructing the holes therein whereby the drills can only be inserted in correct.position. The carrier is mounted on a slide 33 having a depending, slotted arm 43 engaged by an adjustable cross stud 47 carried by an arm 51 on a shaft 53 with a second arm 55 operated by a cam track in the fly wheel 7. The machine can be locked for setting the drill by a cranked pin 61 passing through holes in the frame and entering a hole in the fly wheel. In another form the grinding-wheel is rotated on its axis by power and moved round its orbit by hand, the carrier for the drills being mounted on a pivoted member which is moved from side to side by hand, an adjustable stop limiting the throw.
