Abstract

557,484. Roofs for open-hearth furnaces. BRASSERT & CO., Ltd., H. A. MILES, J., and NISSIM, R. May 16, 1942, Nos. 6672 and 14405. [Class 51 (ii)] An open-hearth furnace roof is constructed to permit charging the furnace from above by providing it with one or more removable sections which may be moved longitudinally of the furnace from their closed position to their open positions so as to lie above a fixed portion of the furnace roof which may also be formed in sections. As shown in Fig. 1, each removable section 10A, 10B, constructed of refractory bricks and surrounded by a metallic frame may be lifted by a hydraulic piston and cylinder 12 through wheels 13 and chains 14 and traversed langitudinally of the furnace by a hydraulic piston and cylinder 15 until it lies above the fixed portion 10 of the roof. The roof sections may be operated by pneumatic, electric, steam or other means. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the roof is formed of removable charging sections 10A, 10B and removable fixed sections 19, 20, 21. 22, 23. The longitudinal edges of all the sections may be provided with sand seals. The horizontal central portions of the charging sections are stepped up at 49 to engage the frame 24 which may be cooled. Sealing between the charging sections and between the charging and fixed sections of the roof may be effected by sand seals 27, Fig. 7, into which dip hinged flanges 26 on the charging sections. As shown in Fig. 8 the roof sections may be made in two parts 39A, 39B with the longitudinal central rows of bricks 37, 38 formed with abutting concave and convex surfaces respectively, the joint being covered by a flexible metal cover 40. The longitudinal outer edges of the sections are provided with concave or convex liners 43 co-operating with convex or concave portions 42 of the skewback 41 mounted on the furnace wall 47. The two sections 39A, 39B of the roof may pivot about the joint 36 and the edges 34, 35 which are provided with sand seals 45. Specifications 542,239 and 557,508 are referred to.
