557,211. Catalytic apparatus and processes. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. March 24, 1942, No 3904. Convention date, March 3, 1941. [Class 1 (i)] In the simultaneous and alternate execution of catalytic endothermic and exothermic reactions in separate, contiguous reaction zones, the reactants in each zone are passed in indirect heat exchange through the other zone at a plurality of points along the length of the zones. The invention is particularly applicable to the conversion of hydrocarbons and the regeneration of the catalyst. In one form of apparatus each reactor comprises a series of superposed compartments 10-12, 13-15 respectively, each containing a catalyst bed 4 on a perforated support 5. Adjacent compartments of each series are connected by pipe coils 16-19 respectively each passing through two adjacent compartments of the opposite series. The coils may be embedded in the catalyst layers, or in the spaces above and below them as shown.
