Abstract

557,150. R÷ntgen-ray apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CALDWELL. J. T. Sept. 14, 1942, No. 12943. [Classes 91 (i) and 98 (i)] A device for adjustably limiting the divergence of radiation from a source of X-rays comprises a hollow member 22, Fig. 3, capable of angular displacement about an axis 23 normal to the axis of the cone of radiation and provided with an even number of apertures of difl'erent sizes in its periphery, so that the radiation passes through alternative pairs. As shown, the member 22 is of square section, giving four degrees of divergence according to its setting, and is mounted in a casing 20 carried by the X-ray tube holder 21. To facilitate adjustment of the apparatus so that the axis of the cone of radiation passes through the centre of the screen a detachable sighting device is provided consisting of a tubular body 34, Fig. 12, containing a mirror 36 which is equally inclined to the axis of the cone and to the line through an aperture 35 in a diaphragm and crossed wires forming an object 38, this line and the axis of the cone intersecting at the mirror. In the form shown, the tube 34 is inserted through a hollow trunnion 25 which carries one side of the member 22.
