557,095. Mercury switches. PEEBLES & CO., Ltd., B., WOOD & CO., Ltd., H., and BURNS. P. Oct. 30, 1941, No. 1947/43. Divided out of 557,065. [Class 38 (v)] Flame-proof electrical switchgear controlling machines in mines include mercury switches arranged to isolate one live contact on tilting, and to connect a centre contact or contacts with another, connected to earth, as a safety precaution. In the examples, Fig. 1 shows a single angled casing 1 with mercury 6 and inert gas, with three contacts of which, normally one outer 2 is live, the centre 3, is connected to the machine to be isolated and the third 4 is connected to earth. On tilting from the position shown, the main supply current passing from 2 to 3 is stopped and, after a short delay caused by a baffle 5, the machine is earthed through 3 and 4. In Fig. 3, two separate switches 7, 8 are used, contact 10 being the supply, contacts 11 and 12 joined and connected to the machine, and contact 13 earthed. In a further modification two such separate switches are formed in one outer casing and the earthing switch has a baffle similar to 5, Fig. 1.
