556,895. Isomerising hydrocarbons. ANGLO-IRANIAN OIL CO., Ltd., FAWCETT, E. W. M., and JENKINS, G. I. July 1, 1941 No. 8306. Drawings to Specification. [Class 2 (iii)] Branched chain alkanes are produced by subjecting normal alkanes containing more than three carbon atoms in the molecule to the reaction temperature while carrying in suspension the vapour of a metallic halide catalyst such as an aluminium halide having a measurable vapour pressure at or below the reaction temperature, the mixture of catalyst vapour and product, after leaving the reaction vessel, being passed through a sorption vessel packed with a sorptive medium until this medium becomes saturated or partly so with catalyst. The sorption vessel is then used as saturator to supply catalyst to the normal alkane which is passed therethrough. Examples are given of the isomerization of n - butane using bauxite as sorptive medium. Small losses of catalyst are made up by passing the alkane over lump aluminium chloride.
