556,743. Moulding lenses, prisms &c., from transparent thermoplastic materials; electric heating; pliers. KINGSTON, A. W. March 16,1942, Nos. 3474/42 and 427/43. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups XI and XXIII] The workpiece which is to be moulded is preformed by cutting, grinding or like mechanical operations to a shape closely approximating its final shape, and the preform is then moulded between dies. Before moulding the preform may be polished. The preform may be made by cutting a blank from a sheet, turning the blank to a curved surface by means of a cutter in a lathe, and grinding the curved surface, the resulting preform being polished on a rotary buffing machine. The moulding dies and the preform may be of such relative shapes that during the moulding free outlet for air is allowed towards the periphery of the die parts ; thus, the radius of curvature of a convex preform may be slightly less than the radius of curvature of the corresponding die surface, and the radius of a concave preform slightly greater than the. radius of the corresponding die surface. The thermoplastic material may be methyl methacrylate polymer, polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride. The preforms are preheated by being gripped in tongs 27 and inserted into a rheostatcontrolled electric oven 23 mounted on a frame near a moulding press 13. The heated preform is then placed on the lower die 12 which is raised by hydraulic means so that the preform is compressed between the dies 12, 15. At this stage, the dies are heated by contact with jackets 11, 16 connected to steam conduits 20, 22. After moulding, the steam is turned off and the jackets are cooled by means of cold water conduits 19, 21. During cooling, pressure is maintained on the moulded article by means of a spring 18. When the press is opened, the bottom die 12 is lifted out of its surround 10 by means of a pivoted hand-lever 33 connected to the die by a yoke 31 and rod 30.
