Abstract

556,696. Turning; grinding. HOFFMAN, G., HOFFMAN, G., HOFFMAN, L., (trading as MAN & CO., G.), and PARRIS, W. A. S. May 7, 1942, No. 6146. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] Apparatus for machining or grinding one or both ends of work pieces such as sleeves for bullets and like ammunition includes a clamp, adapted to grip work pieces, and tool holders located at one or both ends of the work and moved up to the work in timed relation with the operation of the clamping means. The main framework includes top and bottom rectangular frames 16, 14 respectively, connected by corner vertical members 20 ... 23 and additional vertical members 24, 25 at the front of the machine. Horizontal bars 26 ... 28 are supported at the front and another bar 29 towards the rear. The work clamp comprises a fixed upper V-jaw 36 secured to a plate 40 and a lower V-jaw 38 movable in a guide 42. Blanks may be fed from a hopper 44 through a shoot 46 to a feed channel 51 containing a releasing device comprising a member 66, 68 secured to a plate 58 pivoted at 60 and weighted at 64. A movable stop 72 is secured to arms connected to the counterweight. In the Fig. 4 position a blank A rests between the member 66, 68 and the stop 70. When the feed device rocks about the pivot 60 a blank is released from the stop but is arrested by the stop 72, but when the parts are returned to the Fig. 4 position the blank rolls down on to the lower jaw 38 of the clamp. The clamp is operated by a rocker 80 pivoted at 88 to a spring-controlled sliding rod 90. The rocker carries a pin 108 coacting with prongs 104, 106 on a rod 102 movable in a stop 110 and acting through springs 118, 120, on a compensating bar 112 connected by pin-and-slot connections 124, 126, or by links, to angle levers 132, 134 which impart axial movement to tool spindles 140, 142 arranged in axial alignment with the work-pieces and having tool-holders 114, 116 respectively. The main drive shaft 150 carried in bearings 152, 154 is connected through worm gearing 166 to an upper countershaft 158 connected to belt pulleys 144, 146 on the respective tool holders, and through worm gearing 160 to a lower countershaft 156 which, through a connecting rod 170, rocks a beam 172 pivoted at 174. This beam is connected by a link 180 with the beam 80 which is thus operated first to clamp the work and then through the bar 112 to advance the tools. A U-shaped ejector plate 183 counterweighted at 185 is rocked upwardly by the work during the upward movement of the lower clamping jaw but when the lower jaw descends the work engages the limbs of the ejector plate and is separated from the jaw. In a modification only one tool holder may be employed.
