Abstract

556,669. Grenade mortar. BRANNAN, J. A. April 8, 1942, No. 4598. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] A muzzle-loading mortar for firing grenades comprises a breech body 2 fitting the rear of a drawn steel tubular barrel 1 and a breech block 7 swinging laterally on an eccentric pin 8 when a handle 7a is operated to open and close the breech, the closing movement being limited by a pin 10 moving in an arcuate slot in the block. Further, a pivoted spring-loaded hammer 18 mounted on the block is adapted to be cocked into engagement with a spring catch released by a firing-lever or trigger 18a pivoted to an aiming- handle 26, the hammer then striking a firing pin 11 for a sporting cartridge x. A gas chamber 5 is provided between the cartridge and the grenade. A miniature calibre barrel 35 may be screwed into the breech body 2.
