Abstract
556,656. Collapsable boats; spars. COW & CO., Ltd., P. B., and HUIZINGA, W. A. May 16, 1942, No. 6659. [Classes 113 (ii) and 115] A collapsable boat or dinghy formed of rubberized fabric is constructed of a rim having a number of separately inflatable sections a, b, c, d separated by diaphragms 3 located near the centre of the dinghy. Adjacent sections a, c: b, d are separated by diaphragms 4, and the inflation valves 5 of the sections are arranged close together, and the sections may be inflated automatically by connection with a bottle containing gas under pressure. The rims of the dinghy are held apart by stiffeners 6, 7 which may be inflated through non- return valves 6', 7<SP>1</SP> from the sections a, b, or may be inflated by hand bellows 9 and valves 8. The sections may also be inflated by hand-bellows. The fore part may be protected by a flexible cover 10 which when unfurled is secured by press fasteners to a strip of webbing extending from the nose of the dinghy back to a mast 11. A collapsable keel 14 is fitted, and a telescopic mast 11 may be secured by guy ropes 13, the mast being received in a socket 12 secured to the fabric bottom 2, a supplementary rubber tube 12' being secured to the bottom around the socket and extending above the upper part of the sides of the dinghy. Steering is effected by an oar and flexible rowlock 15 in the stern, and the sides may be fitted with flexible rowlocks. The stiffeners 6, 7 may support seats, and a rope ladder 16 together with a line permit of access to the dinghy. The line may be fitted with rubber foot supports to assist rowing. The floor 2 may be inflatable, and provision may be made for propulsion by an out-board motor. According to the Provisional Specification the cover 10 is secured to inflatable hoop members, and the bellows formed with a folding handle. Also the keel may be formed of two parts formed as flexible bags formed with holes in the upper parts adapted to assist righting of the boat after it has been turned upside down.
