[Class 44] Apparatus for applying a continuous row of connected non-metallic sliding- clasp fastener elements to the beaded edge of a stringer tape as described in Specification 533,655, in which a strip of material 17, perforated to ladderlike form, and bent into U-formation along its central line, is applied to the tape with the limbs of the U embracing the tape edge, the material of the strip being then cut away to leave the separated fastener members 30 in situ, comprises means for accommodating part of fhe tape with the beaded edge exposed and means for embracing and positioning the corresponding part of the strip on the tape edge, the means being movable with respect to the tape and strip to apply the latter progressively. Figs.. 1, 2, 3 show the web 6 of the tape accommodated in the space between two rollers 1, 2 (alternatively in a grooved single roller) with the thickened edge 7 of the tape bearing thereon tangentially, and an opposed roller 12 having a groove 16 which accommodates and positions part of the strip 17, this roller having spring-loaded bearings. The tape is guided to and from the rollers by fixed guide rails 10, 11, a spring-loaded grooved roller 22 bearing against the applied strip 17 as it passes over rails 11. The strip 17 is fed down an inclined guide 20 which carries a fixed needle 2,1 projecting into the space between the bight of the strip and the bead 7 to space the bight from the tape edge. The needle is somewhat wider than the space between the limbs of the strip so that these are slightly separated to facilitate insertion of the bead, the limbs subsequently springing back to grip the bead. The tape and strip may be pulled between the rollers under a roller 56 in a vessel 55 from which a moistening or adhesive medium is supplied, and by hand *or, as shown, the rollers may be driven through a belt-pulley 4 and gear wheels 14, 15. In a modification, Fig. 6, the tape is passed is then twisted through 90 degrees as it passes a horizontal guide roller 60 to inclined rollers 45, 46 the peripheries of which bear behind the downwardly directed, bead 7. The strip 17 is fed below a guide 44 and over supporting rollers 40 to pass over inclined rollers 47, 48, the peripheries of which are shaped to embrace the strip and apply it to the bead, a fixed needle 54 being provided to function in a manner similar to that of needle 21. The tape and applied strip then pass over pairs of inclined rollers 61, 62, 63, 64 to tensioning rollers 70, 71 which grip the tape and are driven at a slightly greater peripheral speed than the linear speed of the tape. The other rollers referred to are driven at constant speed by means not shown.
