Abstract

1319329 Making sliding clasp fasteners TEXTRON Inc 30 Dec 1970 [12 Feb 1970] 61821/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] A machine for coiling plastics filaments, e.g. nylon for slide fastener stringers includes a rotatable shaft 54 to one end of which is fed a continuous filament which passes along a longitudinal slot 68 and via a bank 28 of tension rollers to the opposite hollow coiling end of the shaft in which is located a stationary mandrel 32 having a shank 176 within the shaft and a needle portion 180 extending therefrom. The needle portion is curved and extends into a circumferential groove 184 in an electrically heated rotary curing wheel 34 and is held in position by a roller 196, Fig. 11, whereby the mandrel is prevented from rotating so that as the shaft rotates the filament is coiled around the needle portion and is received into the groove which houses spaced teeth therealong which engage the coil turns and pulls the coiled filament from the mandrel. As shown in Fig. 2 there are two such shaft assemblies with mandrels 32, 32<SP>1</SP>, each feeding a circumferential groove in the curing wheel; each filament is fed from a spool 24 or 24<SP>1</SP> which rotate with the assemblies. The curved coils are held in the grooves by stationary bands engaging the groove sides and are stripped from the grooves by strippers 206, 206<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 11, and supplied to a loom including weaving assemblies 36, 36<SP>1</SP> whereby the coiled filaments 20 are joined to slide fastener tape. On leaving the wheel the coiled filaments are fed into conduits 42, 42<SP>1</SP> to which air is supplied. The bank of tension rollers, Fig. 6, includes laterally adjustable rollers 110, 112 enabling the filament to be located in position; a roller braking means includes an H-shaped spring 134 urged downwardly by a central bolt 140 against a plate 136 having braking pads 138 on its underside which engage the tops of the rollers. The mandrel is adjustably supported in a holder 142, Fig. 5, in the hollow end of the shaft 54 by two compressed pads which engage the opposite sides of the mandrel when a clamping member 168 is urged downwardly by a set screw 174.
