Abstract
556,531. Lighting fittings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 16, 1942, No. 5043. Convention date, April 18, 1941. [Classes 75 (ii) and 75 (iv)] In order to shield the observers eyes from excessive brightness while producing a distribution of light flux ot maximum angular spread, elongated light sources such as tubular fluorescent lamps 16 are mounted in trough-shaped elliptical reflecting surfaces 21 with their axes parallel to the focal lines of the reflectors in such positions that a plane A passing through a lower edge of one reflecting surface at such an angle, say 40 degrees, to the horizontal at which it is desired to shield the light source from direct observation is tangential to the light emitting surface and intersects the other reflecting surface at right angles to the tangent plane C. A space may be left between the upper edges of the reflectors to allow the unobstructed passage of light upwardly for an angle of say 94 degrees. The lamps and reflectors are mounted in a rectangular frame carried by spaced rods 13 and are shielded from observation in a longitudinal direction by transverse louvres 18. The sockets 17 supporting the lamps may be of the type described in Specification 526,713, [Group XXXIV]. The reflectors may be of polished aluminium, glass, or plastic backed with metal.
