Abstract

555,987. Valves. TRICO PRODUCTS CORPORATION. March 11, 1942, No. 3230. Convention date, March 13, 1941. [Class 135] [Also in Groups X and XXIV] A window for a motor vehicle is pivoted for up and down movement about a horizontal axis, and is operated by fluid pressure or suction such as a vacuum tank or suction from the inlet manifold of the vehicle's engine, the pressure being transmitted by valves to the piston of a fluid pressure cylinder. A window 13 is mounted on a channel bar 15 pivoted at 16 to a door, and counterbalanced by a spring 17. The piston rod 31 of a cylinder 29 is pivoted at 26 to the carrier bar, and tubes 45, 46 pass to each end of the cylinder and are connected through valves 47, 48 with a tube 49 leading to a vacuum tank or the intake of the vehicle's engine. Thus by suitable operation of the valves 47, 48 the window is raised or lowered. Similar mechanism is employed for operation of rear window 14. The piston is locked in the cylinder to prevent movement of the window other than by the pneumatic means. A member 32, Fig. 2, of the piston is rigid with the rod 31, and has secured to it a cup leather 33. The other face of the piston, including cup leather 34, is secured to a pair of lock members 37 between which and sloping surfaces 43 on the member 32 are rollers 42. If piston rod 31 is pressed to the right, the left face of the piston is advanced towards the right compressing a weak spring 36 and, due to inclined surfaces 41 and 43, the rollers 42 press the lock members 37 against the cylinder and lock the piston. The valves 47, 48 controlling the fluid flow through ducts 45, 46 are formed in a unit, with nipples 85, 86 for connections to opposite ends of the operative cylinder, and with a nipple 87 leading to the suction conduit 49. Cylinder ports 89, 91 communicating with nipples 85, 86, and ports 92, 93 communicating with nipple 87 open into valve seat 88. A valve member 95 is operated by button 101, and has a lug 106 bearing on a plate 107 between which and a perforated closure 108 is a felt pad 109. A recess 110 in the valve member 95 as shown opens communication between ports 89 and 92, but with the button pressed inwards, port 92 is closed, and port 89 opened to the atmosphere, air entering the tube 45 through perforated closure 108, felt 109, port 89 and nipple 85. A valve member 111 similar to member 95 controls ports 91, 93, and is operated by push button 120. Thus, by pressing the upper button 101, the window is moved towards the closed position, and is opened by pressing the lower button. In a modified window, the glass may be circular and pointed at its centre. Specification 549,169, [Group X], is referred to.
