Abstract

218,579. Radovsky, D. R. Jan. 10, 1924. Addition to 157,773. Windows and the like, cleaning.- The apparatus described in the parent Specification, in which a wiper is reciprocated over the screen by fluid pressure acting on a piston working within a cylinder, the piston being connected to the wiper by a flexible band, is made more compact by mounting the guide 34 for the wiper 30 adjacent to the cylinder 1 along one edge of the screen 2 and making the guide below for use as a conduit for the working fluid. Hollow castings 3, 4 carry the ends of the cylinder and guide and have mounted in them pulleys 13, 14 over which passes a flexible steel band 19 fixed to the piston 20 and the. wiper-carrier 27 and passing through stuffing-boxes 23, 24. One end of the hollow guide 34 communicates with the chamber 10 of the casting 4, which is connected by an aperture 12 with the left-hand side of the piston, while the other end of the guide is connected with a port 47 in the front face of the casting 3. Other ports 48, 49 in this face communicate with the. source of suction or pressure and the right-hand side of the piston respectively, and a slide-valve 46 cooperates with the ports to supply the working fluid to either side of the piston alternately. As shown in Fig. 4, the right-hand side of the piston is connected to the port 48, while the. left-hand side communicates through the port 47 with the valve chamber, which is open to the atmosphere at 68. The slide valve is held on its seating and operated by a spring arm 52 which is rocked by a switch 54 operated by a tappet-rod 60 slidably mounted at each end in the castings 3, 4 and having abutments 66 adapted to be engaged by the wiper-carrier 27 at the ends of its travel. Buffer springs 67 are fitted to prevent noise.
