Abstract

[Class 100 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A cradle for supporting and rotating a coil of steel strip during unwinding comprises a number of roll shafts 20 each supporting a number of rolls, in the example, four. The rolls comprise cylindrical bodies keyed to the shafts and each having two grooves 24 to receive metallic bands 25 provided with lugs 30 and tightening screws 31, the screws and lugs being received in recesses in the rolls, and the gaps in the two bands on the same roll being diametrically opposite. The keys are set and the various shafts so turned that all the gaps are staggered with respect to the point of contact with the coil. The shafts are supported in pairs on rockers 19 on shafts 15 mounted in brackets 14 on cross bars 13. The shafts 15 are intergeared by a chain and sprocket and one of them has a second sprocket for a driving chain. Pinions on the shafts 15 mesh with pinions on the shafts 20. End frames 4 laterally adjustable on side rails 1 by right and left hand screws 11 carry discs 10 to confine the coils laterally. The frames are bolted at 6 after adjustment. The bands 25 are covered with friction material consisting of layers of rubber and canvas cemented in position and further secured by countersunk rivets.
