555,570. Fatty acids. OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCH FOUNDATION. Sept. 23, 1941, No. 12332. Convention date, Oct. 4 1940. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Marine oil fatty acids are treated to separate them into fractions consisting of saturated and unsaturated acids (the latter having different numbers of double bonds) by dissolving in a solvent and cooling to effect fractional crystallization. The several cooling stages may be in the range 0‹ to -80‹ C., the first crystals being the saturated acids and the final solution the most highly unsaturated. The several fractions all contain acids of different molecular weights. Detailed examples are given of the fractionation of the acids of menhaden oil, other oils mentioned being herring, sardine and whale oils. Specification 439,128 is referred to.
